All the follicles in the ovary start off as primordial follicles. A primordial follicle is just 25 micro meters—that's 0.025 millimeters. It is impossible to see with the naked eye, let alone on an ultrasound. Normal sonographic appearance . The normal ovary has a homogeneous echotexture, which may exhibit a central, more echogenic medulla. At birth, the ovary contains around 400 000 primordial follicles which contain primary oocytes. These primary oocytes do not undergo further mitotic division, and they remain arrested in the prophase stage of meiotic division I, until sexual maturity (see Meiosis, in the topic cell).


An ovarian follicle is a roughly spheroid cellular aggregation set found in the ovaries. It secretes hormones that influence stages of the menstrual cycle.
